Silver Surfers

In keeping with last week’s practice of anticipating the peerless Frozen Planet with a variation on the same arctic theme (NB. The theme could be antarctic too: Red Nails is nothing if not cheery about both magnetic poles) I present these shots by Ben Herndon of extreme ice climbing in the Northwestern United States.

Though I’m not normally one for extreme sports, Ben’s photographs simultaneously terrified and thrilled, which is impressive for a Wednesday. The cascades of ice are sculptural and deadly in equal measure and while the scenery is stunning, I think I might be happy to admire this fresh mental. These men are completely mental endeavour from a distance, hand crampons and the attendant Spiderman impressions regardless.
